So far, in this blog's infancy, I've claimed numerous times that I'm not an environmentalist. Then I go on talking about how eating locally is better for the environment. I explain:
I don't care too terribly much about this planet Earth. It's all going away someday. My boyfriend and I always end up watching discovery channel specials about the End of Existence, and it doesn't much bother me. When they say that humanity and all its achievements will be wiped out forever, my response is usually "Good." I welcome the apocalypse... In fact, I can't wait! Hurry up, horsemen!
But despite my hopeful embrace of the apocalypse, I drive a small, fuel-efficient car. I replaced all our old lightbulbs with energy-saving ones. I used to drive a scooter, before someone smashed it. I recycle, I take re-usable bags to the grocery store, I love farmer's markets. And I am a strong believer in true sustainability.
First of all, I do a lot of these things because I make very little money. Spending maybe $45 a month on gas for my petite automobile is excellent. I also feel oppressed by corporate power in America, and sustainable farming and eating is actually quite subversive. Most importantly, I guess, I feel like it's not my decision to make, whether or not we as a global society let the world fall into disrepair. You know, maybe I love murdering people, but the people I target don't necessarily want to be murdered. They have the right not to be murdered. Same deal: maybe I don't give a damn whether all of humanity dies out... But the rest of humanity might not share that viewpoint. It's not up to me. I can't contribute to the death of the planet, because after all, I'm not malicious, just indifferent.
But I do want to someday purchase a hand held video camera, so I can document that fateful day when humanity finally destroys itself. How rad would that be.
